## Al-Ma'aarij

**Translation:** The Ascending Stairways
**Revelation:** Meccan
**Number of Verses:** 44

### Pre-Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

*In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.*

### Verses

#### Verse 1

سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ

**Transliteration:** Sa ala saaa'ilum bi'azaa binw-waaqi'

**Translation:** A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen

#### Verse 2

لِّلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ

**Transliteration:** Lilkaafireen laisa lahoo daafi'

**Translation:** To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.

#### Verse 3

مِّنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ

**Transliteration:** Minal laahi zil ma'aarij

**Translation:** [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent.

#### Verse 4

تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

**Transliteration:** Ta'rujul malaaa'ikatu war Roohu ilaihi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoo khamseena alfa sanah

**Translation:** The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.

#### Verse 5

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا

**Transliteration:** Fasbir ssabran jameelaa

**Translation:** So be patient with gracious patience.

#### Verse 6

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا

**Transliteration:** Inaahum yarawnahoo ba'eedaa

**Translation:** Indeed, they see it [as] distant,

#### Verse 7

وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا

**Transliteration:** Wa naraahu qareebaa

**Translation:** But We see it [as] near.

#### Verse 8

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ

**Transliteration:** Yawma takoonus samaaa'u kalmuhl

**Translation:** On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,

#### Verse 9

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ

**Transliteration:** Wa takoonul jibaalu kal'ihn

**Translation:** And the mountains will be like wool,

#### Verse 10

وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا

**Transliteration:** Wa laa yas'alu hameemun hameemaa

**Translation:** And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,

#### Verse 11

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Yubassaroonahum; ya waddul mujrimu law yaftadee min 'azaabi yawma'izim bibaneeh

**Translation:** They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children

#### Verse 12

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Wa saahibatihee wa akheeh

**Translation:** And his wife and his brother

#### Verse 13

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Wa faseelathil latee tu'weeh

**Translation:** And his nearest kindred who shelter him

#### Verse 14

وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Wa man fil ardi jamee'an summa yunjeeh

**Translation:** And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.

#### Verse 15

كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Kallaa innahaa lazaa

**Translation:** No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],

#### Verse 16

نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Nazzaa'atal lishshawaa

**Translation:** A remover of exteriors.

#### Verse 17

تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Tad'oo man adbara wa tawallaa

**Translation:** It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]

#### Verse 18

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ

**Transliteration:** W jama'a fa aw'aa

**Translation:** And collected [wealth] and hoarded.

#### Verse 19

۞ إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا

**Transliteration:** Innal insaana khuliqa haloo'aa

**Translation:** Indeed, mankind was created anxious:

#### Verse 20

إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا

**Transliteration:** Izaa massahush sharru jazoo'aa

**Translation:** When evil touches him, impatient,

#### Verse 21

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا

**Transliteration:** Wa izaa massahul khairu manoo'aa

**Translation:** And when good touches him, withholding [of it],

#### Verse 22

إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ

**Transliteration:** Illal musalleen

**Translation:** Except the observers of prayer -

#### Verse 23

الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ

**Transliteration:** Allazeena hum 'alaa Salaatihim daaa'imoon

**Translation:** Those who are constant in their prayer

#### Verse 24

وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ

**Transliteration:** Wallazeena feee amwaalihim haqqum ma'loom

**Translation:** And those within whose wealth is a known right

#### Verse 25

لِّلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ

**Transliteration:** Lissaaa 'ili walmahroom

**Translation:** For the petitioner and the deprived -

#### Verse 26

وَالَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ

**Transliteration:** Wallazeena yusaddiqoona bi yawmid Deen

**Translation:** And those who believe in the Day of Recompense

#### Verse 27

وَالَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ

**Transliteration:** Wallazeena hum min 'azaabi Rabbihim mushfiqoon

**Translation:** And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -

#### Verse 28

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ

**Transliteration:** Inna 'azaaba Rabbihim ghairu maamoon

**Translation:** Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -

#### Verse 29

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ

**Transliteration:** Wallazeena hum lifuroo jihim haafizoon

**Translation:** And those who guard their private parts

#### Verse 30

إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ

**Transliteration:** Illaa 'alaaa azwaajihim aw maa malakat aymaanuhum fainnahum ghairu maloomeen

**Translation:** Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -

#### Verse 31

فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ

**Transliteration:** Famanib taghaa waraaa'a zaalika fa ulaaa'ika humul 'aadoon

**Translation:** But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -

#### Verse 32

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ

**Transliteration:** Wallazeena hum li amaa naatihim wa 'ahdihim raa'oon

**Translation:** And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive

#### Verse 33

وَالَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَائِمُونَ

**Transliteration:** Wallazeena hum bishahaadaatihim qaaa'imoon

**Translation:** And those who are in their testimonies upright

#### Verse 34

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ

**Transliteration:** Wallazeena hum 'alaa salaatihim yuhaafizoon

**Translation:** And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:

#### Verse 35

أُولَٰئِكَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ

**Transliteration:** Ulaaa'ika fee jannaatim mukramoon

**Translation:** They will be in gardens, honored.

#### Verse 36

فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ

**Transliteration:** Famaa lil lazeena kafaroo qibalaka muhti'een

**Translation:** So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad],

#### Verse 37

عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ

**Transliteration:** 'Anil yameeni wa 'anish shimaali 'izeen

**Translation:** [To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?

#### Verse 38

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ

**Transliteration:** Ayatma'u kullum ri'im minhum anyyudkhala jannata Na'eem

**Translation:** Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?

#### Verse 39

كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

**Transliteration:** Kallaaa innaa khalaq nahum mimmaa ya'lamoon

**Translation:** No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.

#### Verse 40

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ

**Transliteration:** Falaaa uqsimu bi Rabbil mashaariqi wal maghaaribi innaa laqaadiroon

**Translation:** So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able

#### Verse 41

عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

**Transliteration:** 'Alaaa an nubaddila khairam minhum wa maa Nahnu bimasbooqeen

**Translation:** To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.

#### Verse 42

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ

**Transliteration:** Fazarhum yakhoodoo wa yal'aboo hattaa yulaaqoo yaw mahumul lazee yoo'adoon

**Translation:** So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -

#### Verse 43

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ

**Transliteration:** Yawma yakhrujoona minal ajdaasi siraa'an ka anna hum ilaa nusubiny yoofidoon

**Translation:** The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.

#### Verse 44

خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ

**Transliteration:** Khaashi'atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillah; zaalikal yawmul lazee kaanoo yoo'adoon

**Translation:** Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
