## Abasa

**Translation:** He frowned
**Revelation:** Meccan
**Number of Verses:** 42

### Pre-Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

*In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.*

### Verses

#### Verse 1

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** 'Abasa wa tawallaa.

**Translation:** The Prophet frowned and turned away

#### Verse 2

أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ

**Transliteration:** An jaa-ahul 'a-maa

**Translation:** Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

#### Verse 3

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa yudreeka la'allahu yaz zakkaa.

**Translation:** But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

#### Verse 4

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Au yaz zak karu fatanfa 'ahuz zikraa.

**Translation:** Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

#### Verse 5

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Amma manis taghnaa

**Translation:** As for he who thinks himself without need,

#### Verse 6

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Fa-anta lahu tasaddaa

**Translation:** To him you give attention.

#### Verse 7

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa ma 'alaika allaa yaz zakka.

**Translation:** And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

#### Verse 8

وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa amma man jaa-aka yas'a

**Translation:** But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

#### Verse 9

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wahuwa yakhshaa,

**Translation:** While he fears [Allah],

#### Verse 10

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Fa-anta 'anhu talah haa.

**Translation:** From him you are distracted.

#### Verse 11

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

**Transliteration:** Kalla innaha tazkirah

**Translation:** No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

#### Verse 12

فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ

**Transliteration:** Faman shaa a zakarah

**Translation:** So whoever wills may remember it.

#### Verse 13

فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ

**Transliteration:** Fi suhufim mukar rama,

**Translation:** [It is recorded] in honored sheets,

#### Verse 14

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ

**Transliteration:** Marfoo'atim mutah hara,

**Translation:** Exalted and purified,

#### Verse 15

بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ

**Transliteration:** Bi'aidee safara

**Translation:** [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

#### Verse 16

كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ

**Transliteration:** Kiraamim bararah.

**Translation:** Noble and dutiful.

#### Verse 17

قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ

**Transliteration:** Qutilal-insanu maa akfarah.

**Translation:** Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

#### Verse 18

مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ

**Transliteration:** Min aiyyi shai-in Khalaq

**Translation:** From what substance did He create him?

#### Verse 19

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ

**Transliteration:** Min nutfah; khalaqahu faqad-darah.

**Translation:** From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

#### Verse 20

ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ

**Transliteration:** Thummas sabeela yas-sarah

**Translation:** Then He eased the way for him;

#### Verse 21

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ

**Transliteration:** Thumma amatahu fa-aqbarah

**Translation:** Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

#### Verse 22

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ

**Transliteration:** Thumma iza shaa-a ansharah

**Translation:** Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

#### Verse 23

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ

**Transliteration:** Kalla lamma yaqdi maa amarah.

**Translation:** No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

#### Verse 24

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ

**Transliteration:** Falyanzuril insanu ilaa ta-amih

**Translation:** Then let mankind look at his food -

#### Verse 25

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا

**Transliteration:** Anna sabab nalmaa-a sabba.

**Translation:** How We poured down water in torrents,

#### Verse 26

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

**Transliteration:** Thumma sha qaqnal-arda shaqqa.

**Translation:** Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

#### Verse 27

فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا

**Transliteration:** Fa ambatna feeha habba

**Translation:** And caused to grow within it grain

#### Verse 28

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا

**Transliteration:** Wa 'inabaw-wa qadba

**Translation:** And grapes and herbage

#### Verse 29

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا

**Transliteration:** Wa zaitoonaw wanakh la'

**Translation:** And olive and palm trees

#### Verse 30

وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا

**Transliteration:** Wa hadaa-iqa ghulba

**Translation:** And gardens of dense shrubbery

#### Verse 31

وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

**Transliteration:** Wa faki hataw-wa abba.

**Translation:** And fruit and grass -

#### Verse 32

مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ

**Transliteration:** Mata'al-lakum wa li-an'amikum.

**Translation:** [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

#### Verse 33

فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ

**Transliteration:** Faiza jaa-atis saakhah.

**Translation:** But when there comes the Deafening Blast

#### Verse 34

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Yauma yafir-rul mar-u min akheeh

**Translation:** On the Day a man will flee from his brother

#### Verse 35

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Wa ummihee wa abeeh

**Translation:** And his mother and his father

#### Verse 36

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Wa sahi batihee wa baneeh.

**Translation:** And his wife and his children,

#### Verse 37

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ

**Transliteration:** Likul limri-im-minuhm yaumaa-izin shaa nuy-yughneeh

**Translation:** For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

#### Verse 38

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ

**Transliteration:** Wujoo huny-yauma-izim-musfira;

**Translation:** [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

#### Verse 39

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ

**Transliteration:** Dahi katum mustab shirah

**Translation:** Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

#### Verse 40

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

**Transliteration:** Wa wujoohuy yauma-izin 'alaiha ghabar a

**Translation:** And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

#### Verse 41

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

**Transliteration:** Tarhaquha qatarah.

**Translation:** Blackness will cover them.

#### Verse 42

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ

**Transliteration:** Ulaa-ika humul-kafa ratul-fajarah.

**Translation:** Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
