## At-Takwir

**Translation:** The Overthrowing
**Revelation:** Meccan

### Pre-Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

*In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.*

### Verses

#### Verse 1

إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ

**Transliteration:** Izash shamsu kuwwirat

**Translation:** When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

#### Verse 2

وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izan nujoomun kadarat

**Translation:** And when the stars fall, dispersing,

#### Verse 3

وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izal jibaalu suyyirat

**Translation:** And when the mountains are removed

#### Verse 4

وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izal 'ishaaru 'uttilat

**Translation:** And when full-term she-camels are neglected

#### Verse 5

وَإِذَا الْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izal wuhooshu hushirat

**Translation:** And when the wild beasts are gathered

#### Verse 6

وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izal bihaaru sujjirat

**Translation:** And when the seas are filled with flame

#### Verse 7

وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izan nufoosu zuwwijat

**Translation:** And when the souls are paired

#### Verse 8

وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izal maw'oodatu su'ilat

**Translation:** And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

#### Verse 9

بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ قُتِلَتْ

**Transliteration:** Bi ayyi zambin qutilat

**Translation:** For what sin she was killed

#### Verse 10

وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izas suhufu nushirat

**Translation:** And when the pages are made public

#### Verse 11

وَإِذَا السَّمَاءُ كُشِطَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izas samaaa'u kushitat

**Translation:** And when the sky is stripped away

#### Verse 12

وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izal jaheemu su'-'irat

**Translation:** And when Hellfire is set ablaze

#### Verse 13

وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ

**Transliteration:** Wa izal jannatu uzlifat

**Translation:** And when Paradise is brought near,

#### Verse 14

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا أَحْضَرَتْ

**Transliteration:** 'Alimat nafsum maaa ahdarat

**Translation:** A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

#### Verse 15

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ

**Transliteration:** Falaaa uqsimu bil khunnas

**Translation:** So I swear by the retreating stars -

#### Verse 16

الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ

**Transliteration:** Al jawaaril kunnas

**Translation:** Those that run [their courses] and disappear -

#### Verse 17

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ

**Transliteration:** Wallaili izaa 'as'as

**Translation:** And by the night as it closes in

#### Verse 18

وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ

**Transliteration:** Wassubhi izaa tanaffas

**Translation:** And by the dawn when it breathes

#### Verse 19

إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ

**Transliteration:** Innahoo laqawlu rasoolin kareem

**Translation:** [That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger

#### Verse 20

ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ

**Transliteration:** Zee quwwatin 'inda zil 'arshi makeen

**Translation:** [Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

#### Verse 21

مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ

**Transliteration:** Mutaa'in samma ameen

**Translation:** Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

#### Verse 22

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa saahibukum bimajnoon

**Translation:** And your companion is not [at all] mad.

#### Verse 23

وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ بِالْأُفُقِ الْمُبِينِ

**Transliteration:** Wa laqad ra aahu bilufuqil mubeen

**Translation:** And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon.

#### Verse 24

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa huwa 'alal ghaibi bidaneen

**Translation:** And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.

#### Verse 25

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa huwa biqawli shaitaanir rajeem

**Translation:** And the Qur'an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].

#### Verse 26

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ

**Transliteration:** Fa ayna tazhaboon

**Translation:** So where are you going?

#### Verse 27

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

**Transliteration:** In huwa illaa zikrul lil'aalameen

**Translation:** It is not except a reminder to the worlds

#### Verse 28

لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ

**Transliteration:** Liman shaaa'a minkum ai yastaqeem

**Translation:** For whoever wills among you to take a right course.

#### Verse 29

وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa tashaaa'oona illaaa ai yashaaa 'al laahu Rabbul 'Aalameen

**Translation:** And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the worlds.
