## Ash-Shams

**Translation:** The Sun
**Revelation:** Meccan
**Number of Verses:** 15

### Pre-Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

*In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.*

### Verses

#### Verse 1

وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wash shamsi wa duhaa haa

**Translation:** By the sun and its brightness

#### Verse 2

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wal qamari izaa talaa haa

**Translation:** And [by] the moon when it follows it

#### Verse 3

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wannahaari izaa jallaa haa

**Translation:** And [by] the day when it displays it

#### Verse 4

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wallaili izaa yaghshaa haa

**Translation:** And [by] the night when it covers it

#### Verse 5

وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wassamaaa'i wa maa banaahaa

**Translation:** And [by] the sky and He who constructed it

#### Verse 6

وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wal ardi wa maa tahaahaa

**Translation:** And [by] the earth and He who spread it

#### Verse 7

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wa nafsinw wa maa sawwaahaa

**Translation:** And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it

#### Verse 8

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Fa-alhamahaa fujoorahaa wa taqwaahaa

**Translation:** And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,

#### Verse 9

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا

**Transliteration:** Qad aflaha man zakkaahaa

**Translation:** He has succeeded who purifies it,

#### Verse 10

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wa qad khaaba man dassaahaa

**Translation:** And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].

#### Verse 11

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Kazzabat Samoodu bi taghwaahaaa

**Translation:** Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,

#### Verse 12

إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Izim ba'asa ashqaahaa

**Translation:** When the most wretched of them was sent forth.

#### Verse 13

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Faqaala lahum Rasoolul laahi naaqatal laahi wa suqiyaahaa

**Translation:** And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink."

#### Verse 14

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا

**Transliteration:** Fakazzaboohu fa'aqaroohaa fadamdama 'alaihim Rabbuhum bizambihim fasaw waahaa

**Translation:** But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].

#### Verse 15

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا

**Transliteration:** Wa laa yakhaafu'uqbaahaa

**Translation:** And He does not fear the consequence thereof.
