## Al-Lail

**Translation:** The Night
**Revelation:** Meccan
**Number of Verses:** 21

### Pre-Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

*In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.*

### Verses

#### Verse 1

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wallaili izaa yaghshaa

**Translation:** By the night when it covers

#### Verse 2

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wannahaari izaa tajalla

**Translation:** And [by] the day when it appears

#### Verse 3

وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa khalaqaz zakara wal unthaa

**Translation:** And [by] He who created the male and female,

#### Verse 4

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Inna sa'yakum lashattaa

**Translation:** Indeed, your efforts are diverse.

#### Verse 5

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Fa ammaa man a'taa wattaqaa

**Translation:** As for he who gives and fears Allah

#### Verse 6

وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa saddaqa bil husnaa

**Translation:** And believes in the best [reward],

#### Verse 7

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Fasanu yassiruhoo lilyusraa

**Translation:** We will ease him toward ease.

#### Verse 8

وَأَمَّا مَن بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa ammaa mam bakhila wastaghnaa

**Translation:** But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need

#### Verse 9

وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa kazzaba bil husnaa

**Translation:** And denies the best [reward],

#### Verse 10

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Fasanu yassiruhoo lil'usraa

**Translation:** We will ease him toward difficulty.

#### Verse 11

وَمَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ مَالُهُ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa yughnee 'anhu maaluhooo izaa taraddaa

**Translation:** And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?

#### Verse 12

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Inna 'alainaa lal hudaa

**Translation:** Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.

#### Verse 13

وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْآخِرَةَ وَالْأُولَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa inna lanaa lal Aakhirata wal oolaa

**Translation:** And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

#### Verse 14

فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Fa anzartukum naaran talazzaa

**Translation:** So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.

#### Verse 15

لَا يَصْلَاهَا إِلَّا الْأَشْقَى

**Transliteration:** Laa yaslaahaaa illal ashqaa

**Translation:** None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.

#### Verse 16

الَّذِي كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Allazee kazzaba wa tawallaa

**Translation:** Who had denied and turned away.

#### Verse 17

وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا الْأَتْقَى

**Transliteration:** Wa sa yujannnabuhal atqaa

**Translation:** But the righteous one will avoid it -

#### Verse 18

الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Allazee yu'tee maalahoo yatazakkaa

**Translation:** [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself

#### Verse 19

وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُ مِن نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa maa li ahadin 'indahoo min ni'matin tujzaaa

**Translation:** And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded

#### Verse 20

إِلَّا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْأَعْلَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Illab tighaaa'a wajhi rabbihil a 'laa

**Translation:** But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.

#### Verse 21

وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Wa lasawfa yardaa

**Translation:** And he is going to be satisfied.
