## Al-Alaq

**Translation:** The Clot
**Revelation:** Meccan
**Number of Verses:** 19

### Pre-Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

*In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.*

### Verses

#### Verse 1

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

**Transliteration:** Iqra bismi rab bikal lazee khalaq

**Translation:** Recite in the name of your Lord who created -

#### Verse 2

خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

**Transliteration:** Khalaqal insaana min 'alaq

**Translation:** Created man from a clinging substance.

#### Verse 3

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ

**Transliteration:** Iqra wa rab bukal akram

**Translation:** Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

#### Verse 4

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ

**Transliteration:** Al lazee 'allama bil qalam

**Translation:** Who taught by the pen -

#### Verse 5

عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

**Transliteration:** 'Al lamal insaana ma lam y'alam

**Translation:** Taught man that which he knew not.

#### Verse 6

كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Kallaa innal insaana layatghaa

**Translation:** No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

#### Verse 7

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Ar-ra aahus taghnaa

**Translation:** Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

#### Verse 8

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Innna ilaa rabbikar ruj'aa

**Translation:** Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

#### Verse 9

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Ara-aital lazee yanhaa

**Translation:** Have you seen the one who forbids

#### Verse 10

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** 'Abdan iza sallaa

**Translation:** A servant when he prays?

#### Verse 11

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Ara-aita in kana 'alal hudaa

**Translation:** Have you seen if he is upon guidance

#### Verse 12

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Au amara bit taqwaa

**Translation:** Or enjoins righteousness?

#### Verse 13

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

**Transliteration:** Ara-aita in kaz zaba wa ta walla

**Translation:** Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

#### Verse 14

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

**Transliteration:** Alam y'alam bi-an nal lahaa yaraa

**Translation:** Does he not know that Allah sees?

#### Verse 15

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ

**Transliteration:** Kalla la illam yantahi la nasfa'am bin nasiyah

**Translation:** No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock -

#### Verse 16

نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

**Transliteration:** Nasiyatin kazi batin khaatiyah

**Translation:** A lying, sinning forelock.

#### Verse 17

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ

**Transliteration:** Fal yad'u naadiyah

**Translation:** Then let him call his associates;

#### Verse 18

سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ

**Transliteration:** Sanad 'uz zabaaniyah

**Translation:** We will call the angels of Hell.

#### Verse 19

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب ۩

**Transliteration:** Kalla; la tuti'hu wasjud waqtarib

**Translation:** No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].
