Mardanu also knew from people's stories. His own uncle was a fighter who fell in the war of independence. People often praised the late uncle. The story about the uncle was then developed by Mardanu himself into an image of heroism: a young fighter with a bayonet rifle, a red-and-white ribbon headband, advancing courageously to attack the enemy, then collapsing to the ground and falling while embracing the motherland.
